British accessories label Smith & Canova returns to Moda Accessories this season as part of a wider strategy to position the brand in new accounts across the country.
Q: What prompted your return to Moda after an absence of a few seasons?
A: Our last few season’s investments have been spent on international exhibitions and, as that business grows, we are are taking a fresh look at the UK shows. We are hoping to meet lots of new accessories buyers at the show; we have some pre-arranged meetings with existing accounts, but the goal is to meet new buyers for our bag collections across national, multiple and independent retailers.
Q: What’s the Smith & Canova brand all about?
A: British heritage with a contemporary twist. We have four generations of leather craft experience dating back to a leather grindery store in the early 1900s. The knowledge of design and craftsmanship, is made relevant with classic shapes and styles, all in clean cut silhouettes for the modern consumer.
Q: You will be bringing new addition Artsac Workshop this time – what’s the label all about?
A: For Artsac Workshop, we have worked with a mix of different materials. A sporty sneaker fabric makes up the Airborne collection and a toughened up, more premium sneaker fabric makes the Saint collection. Reflective textures and bright, lightweight nylons are featured in the rest of the range.
Q: What about your core Smith & Canova line?
A: Smith & Canova moves its range in a new direction, and contemporary British styling with a twist is the main theme throughout. This season’s offer continues the brand’s elegant and simple styling, maintaining its clean contours and retaining many of the key silhouettes from last season. New elements to the collection include our beautiful soft grain leather bags with oversized hardware, along with the hinge top backpack with contrast trims in our alluring smooth finish. The summer colour palette is soft and tonal with some brighter highlights through the range with contrast trims throughout.
Q: How has diffusion line Claudia Canova developed for the new season?
A: Claudia Canova continues to push the boundaries to create fun and bold looks for its new collection. Back with a bang for summer 18, Claudia Canova continues to be loud and proud with some wild prints and textures, and camos as part of the recurring jungle theme. Backpack's are still a heavy feature in the offer, with subtle pastels, soft metallics, animal prints and even a macaroon print. New additions this season include a quilted offer in soft pinks and jet black, and our new understated unlined bags which have been going down a storm.
Q: Why should buyers take a fresh look at the brand?
A: All in all it’s a very exciting collection, but with a very wide appeal. Each collection has pushed the boundaries of its key strengths without ever compromising on the quality associated with Smith & Canova.
