Fashion is the success story of retail according to industry analysts, following new figures released today. Following the news that non-food sales are up by 2.4 per cent compared to August 2016 (data: ONS), industry analyst Amplience has revealed that fashion in particular is leading the way when it comes to retail resurgence.
“UK retailers appear to be banishing the Brexit blues,” says Craig Smith, vice president of solutions and customer success at Amplience. “Retail sales are higher than they were the same time last year, and online sales continue to grow as a proportion of all retail. However, the real success story is with fashion retail; the amount spent on clothing over the past year has risen more than almost every other retail sector and far above the nine per cent retraction it suffered in August 2016.”
The news is heartening to both brands and retailers across our industry and, furthermore, Smith predicts that the growth can continue if retailers are willing to embrace chance and development in the ways in which customers shop.
“Fashion retailers have truly embraced online, with online fashion showing impressive growth from last month,” continues Smith. “For a sector often viewed as trailing behind other retailers, fashion has shown in August that it is making a strong recovery and is starting to capitalise on the value of its online channels.
“As more customers flock from the store to online and mobile, clothing retailers must double-down on their online investment. Increasingly, the quality of a website’s customer experience offering will be the difference between a sale and a miss, a retailer’s success or failure.”
